you’re (fill in the blank)
by Nicolette Visciano
you’re a phone number i rarely use,
yet can’t seem to delete.
you’re a picture tucked inside a frame,
frozen in a memory.
you’re the june page of my calendar
during the middle of july,
you’re the disappointment in my lungs
as i let out a sigh.
you’re a piece of double-sided tape
stuck between two different places.
you’re a silver dollar in which
you showed me only one of your faces.
you’re the seconds of silence it takes
for the next song to play on a cassette.
you’re the jingle on a year-old commercial
that’s still stuck in my head.
you’re the elephant in the room
when people ask me about you.
because it was always just us two,
a package deal everyone knew.
you’re the deep breath that i take
when someone else makes the mistake
of asking me how you’ve been,
or what you’ve been up to.
the only thing i can say is
i haven’t got a clue,
because there is no more
me and you.
there’s only who
we used to be.
friends who seemed
so close at heart
only to grow
